FALL 2014

Kramer Carnival
September 2014

Art Education students painted many young faces (along with their own!) at the Kramer Elementary Carnival this year.

Art 295 Dot Day

ART 295 students "make their mark" while talking about how we can encourage creativity in the classroom. After creating individual pieces, students created collaborative painted panels that are on display in Art 154.

Faces of Freedom Summer Exhibit
MU Art Museum

September 18, 2014

Students in ART 195 visited the exhibit (photographs by Herbert Randall) and were led through an activity by museum educator Cynthia Collins. Themes of empathy and compassion were stressed as students interacted with the work and discussed ideas with their classmates. ART 295 also visited the exhibit.

Saturday Art Show
December 5 & 6, 2014

Congratulations to all of the Oxford community student artists, grades 1-5, and art education preservice teachers, Danielle Ross and Jane Spooner! The celebration with student artists is Saturday, Dec. 6, from 9 a.m. - 10:30 a.m.

Papier-mache fish creation
(art + science lesson example)

ART 195 students created their own teacher exemplar that could be used in the future for teaching an art + science interdisciplinary lesson. The lesson could be modified for different age levels. It served as an introduction to looking at theme-based lesson plans and walking through one together.

St. Bernard School visit to MU
September 2014

This was a collaboration with Rod Northcutt (sculpture) and Geoff Riggle (metals) to host a local high school group on campus. ART 195 students assisted with the project.

Freedom Summer Walking Tour

Students participated in the Freedom Summer Walking Tour, led by two MU Theatre students, as a pre-visit activity prior to visiting the Faces of Freedom Summer exhibit at the MU Art Museum. Pictured here are ART 195 students, but ART 395 students also participated in the tour.

Dr. Mary Stokrocki visit

As the 36th annual Michael Autobiographical Lecturer, Dr. Mary Stokrocki visited MU's campus for a series of events. On Monday morning, November 17, she presented a workshop on Second Life to interested art education students. On the evening of November 17 was her lecture at Marcum Center with a reception following, hosted by the NAEA student chapter. On Tuesday, November 18, she spoke with a group of advanced art education students in a more intimate panel format, which was followed by a luncheon in Shriver Center. We appreciate this special opportunity to interact on many levels with a leading scholar in the field of art education.

Ideal Space Projects: Art 295
Nov.-Dec. 2014

Students created their collaborative ideal elementary art classroom. While planning, creating blueprints, and building their model, they wrote a collective statement of their vision as well as individual reflections. On display in the Art Building early spring of 2015.

Radial symmetry prints
(design + math lesson example)

ART 195 students created their own exemplar that could be used in the future for teaching a design + math interdisciplinary lesson. In the beginning of the semester students indicated that they would like to know more about printmaking, one of the reasons why this lesson was taught. Styrofoam printing plates can be used with all ages.

December 3 & 4, 2014

Art education students and faculty were invited to view and judge the art show at Franklin County High School in Brookville, IN by art teachers (and MU Art Education alum), Pam Deaton and Liz Conese.
