For some art education courses, you must attend and report on cultural/art events. This gives you experience with art criticism and aesthetics and imagining applications for your future teaching/classroom. It involves attending at least two different cultural/arts events on campus or in the community and writing short critiques of the events. The goal is to be “fully present in the moment” while experiencing the events.
  • Using the format here responding to the topics/questions in sequence
  • Post completed reports on your website
  • If it’s possible, include links and/or images from the event
When writing, make your reports informative rather than appearing like a class assignment. You are gathering useful experience – take advantage and share your new knowledge.
USE THIS FORMAT:
  • Name of Event
  • Date and Location of Event
  • Description of Event: Don’t be skimpy here. What was this event? Was there a theme? Who was involved? What was it for? What went on?
  • Interpretation & Analysis of Event: What did you experience? What do you think it meant and why? How did you connect (or not connect) to this event and why?
  • Connections to the art education classroom: How could you use this content/idea with your future students? How could it connect to the classroom?
  • End your report with overall reflections on the event.
This approach to art criticism follows Edmund Feldman’s (1967) process involving description, analysis, interpretation, and judgment.
