Back to Our Program
Started in 2017, this bi-annual event is a 1-day conference geared completely toward the pre-service educator interested in teaching with and through visual art. It's a day of engaging inquiry, discussion, activity, and presentation suited to answer these questions: What does it mean to teach art effectively? What are some concrete steps you can take toward being a professional art educator? How can you become an empowered pre-service teacher? |
What is this about? |
Ever wonder where your conference is as a pre-service teacher? Who will present ideas geared toward you? Who will answer your questions about where you are now and what it means to navigate teacher preparation? We want to offer the opportunity for pre-service art teachers to gather from near and far to enjoy a conference just for them - to network and form a community of people who are passionate about teaching art.
This 1-day conference is geared completely toward the pre-service educator interested in teaching with and through visual art. It's a day of engaging inquiry, discussion, activity, and presentation suited to answer these questions: What does it mean to teach art effectively? What are some concrete steps you can take toward being a professional art educator? How can you become an empowered pre-service teacher? Many regional and national art teacher conferences offer a few sessions for pre-service educators, but they are not the central focus. It's about time it is. This conference is completely focused on creating a network and community among local and regional pre-service art teachers and provide professional development for where they are now. |

Part of engaging as a professional art teacher is presenting at conferences both local and beyond. We'd like to give students the opportunity to present at this conference, using a pecha kucha format (explained here). There will be a dedicated Student Pecha Kucha room where a new presentation will begin every 10 minutes throughout much of the day. This follows the Curriculum Slam format becoming popular at many conferences. The idea is to quickly and efficiently share ideas with others and gain as much new insight as possible from many perspectives. Students can present on anything from lesson ideas, field experience stories, methods class projects, etc. The idea is to share work of relevance to the pre-service art teacher community.
There are only 20 slots available for this inaugural conference. If you would like to submit a proposal, you must follow the timeline for submission below: Proposal Submission Deadline | Friday, September 6, 2019 (TBA for 2021) For the proposal, you will submit a 150 word (maximum) abstract about your presentation. You will also include an 8-word (maximum) title, and a 30-word (maximum) description to be included in the conference program. To submit a proposal, click here. Notification of acceptance | Sunday, September 8, 2019 (TBA for 2021) You will be contacted via the email you provide by 9/6/19 concerning whether your presentation was accepted. Presentation Powerpoint Deadline | Wednesday, September 18, 2019 (TBA for 2021) Each pecha kucha presentation requires a powerpoint (click here for instructions on creating a PechaKucha).
