Teaching & Technology Tools

Our Art Education program believes in practicing, using, evaluating, and exploring technology tools as they become available. When used well, technology can be a way to make learning more accessible, visual, and intentional. This page highlights some of the ways our program makes use of various technologies.

Teacher websites

In our program, students create teacher websites in their first art education course and develop them throughout the program. The website goes from being a portfolio tool for their growing work in art teacher education and becomes a hiring tool as they go out into the field.
Examples from our alumni:

Project-Based Work

Throughout our program students engage in projects that require the use of various technologies. Some examples are:
  • Stop Motion Animation in Art 195
  • Envisioning Ideal Classrooms in Art 295
  • Curriculum Plans in Art 296
  • Developing professional personas in Art 493
Examples:

Teaching Reflection & Evaluation

As our students complete their 100 hours of required field, they keep a digital field log and journal where they can stay in conversation throughout their program with instructors about what they are seeing and learning in the field. Students also:
  • Video record teaching experiences (iOS devices, Laptops, etc.) for individual and collaborative reflection
  • Video record extended practicum teaching (Swivl, iPad, etc.) for both internal and external reflection and evaluation
Students use a variety of platforms to engage in teaching evaluation and reflection (i.e. Google Docs, Google Forms, Canvas, etc.) and more recently have become adept at video conferencing on various platforms (Zoom, Google Meet, WebEx, etc.)

Advocacy  & Leadership

We encourage students to engage in advocacy practices on social media platforms they are already engaged in (e.g. Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, etc.)

Our program also maintains an Instagram account, "miamioharted" where we advocate both for the program and the field of art education.
