Testing & the edTPA |
The required certification tests for art education licensure in Ohio are 004 Assessment of Professional Knowledge: Multi-Age (PK-12) (This is OAE Assessment of Professional Knowledge) and 006 Art (This is the OAE Content Assessment). The 006 needs to be taken prior to student teaching and the 004 is taken towards the end of student teaching. These are both Pearson tests and each tests costs $105. No Praxis tests are required. |
006: Taken the semester BEFORE student teaching |
For the 006 art content test, we have been recommending that students study the Annotated Mona Lisa text. There are also Quizlet flashcards online to help study for the Praxis II, which I know is not the test you are taking, but is likely comparable. Here are a few links to those:

edTPA: Taken DURING your first 8-week placement |
edTPA is not about theory. It goes beyond classroom credits to ask teacher candidates to demonstrate what they can and will do on the job, translating into practice what research shows improves learning. |
Art education student teachers have a split placement for student teaching. This means you will student teach for 8 weeks in an elementary placement and 8 weeks in a secondary placement (middle or high school), but not necessarily in that sequence. You will complete your edTPA during your first 8 week placement. The fee associated with edTPA is attached to registration for ART 419, our student teaching course. Since Pearson created this standardized assessment, certified Pearson scorers assess your work.
At the beginning of your student teaching semester, there will be a required training for edTPA for all student teachers together in McGuffey Hall. You will be supported through the process in art education student teaching seminar. It is important to note that though your supervisor and cooperating teacher can support you during the process, but they are not permitted to review your writing or give advice about your video segments for the assessment.
Current news concerning the edTPA
Check the edTPA website for updates for a specific state. State requirements may change frequently.
As of June 2020, these are the states which require edTPA for licensure, along with their passing score for Visual Arts:

Current news concerning the edTPA
- Ohio does not currently require the edTPA for state licensure, HOWEVER, Miami University (and many other schools) require it for graduation and recommendation for licensure.

004: Taken during your 2nd 8-week placement DURING student teachingStarting in fall 2020, the Ohio Department of Education stated that a passing score (37 or above) on the edTPA would replace the need to take the 004. Please check with your student teaching supervisor to double-check this is still the case.
If you do not pass the edTPA, you can still take the 004 in order to gain state licensure. |
For the 004 pedagogy test, we recommend looking back at the educational psychologists like Gardner, Piaget, Froebel, ones you would have looked at in education psychology courses. We would highly recommend talking to your peers who have taken the tests. ** The Art Education Program has purchased comprehensive study guides for both the 004 and 006 exams. You can borrow these prior to your exam to study for up to a week at a time. See Dr. Baer or Dr. Danker to check one out. Only one copy for each is available so plan ahead!

Click here to visit the Ohio Assessments for Educators website, which includes information about testing dates and fees. Please note: It is important that when you register, you indicate that you want to send test results to Miami University. The Teacher Education office needs your results on file to be able to recommend you for a teaching license.
Below: The first document lists what assessments you need to take for Ohio licensure, broken down by content area. (This reinforces the information provided above.) The second document shows where the Pearson testing centers are located. Disregard the first page, which is specific to the Praxis testing, not required for art education.
