Department of Art Anti-Racism Statement: The Department of Art condemns racism, police brutality, and mourns the deaths of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, and far too many more black men and women killed by police. We recognize that systemic racism is real and that we must not be silent or indifferent to the widespread injustice and violence inflicted upon black, indigenous, and people of color. We forcefully condemn these murders, recognize that Black Lives Matter, and stand in solidarity with those fighting for social justice. We furthermore are horrified by reports of recent racist statements made by an individual associated with the Miami faculty against those demonstrating for change. We denounce racism and intolerance within our institution and are committed to providing an environment of respect and acceptance for our students. We also recognize that denouncing racism is just the first step toward creating that environment. Change requires work, reflection, and growth.  Art can be a powerful force against injustice in the world, and we are committed to evaluating our curriculum and our own roles as educators, artists, and scholars in order to  grow in our commitment to social justice by learning, listening, and engaging in difficult but necessary conversations.
