Admission Requirements for Art Education

To become an Art Education major, you will apply as a freshmen to Miami with the normal application process. In addition to that, you will submit a digital portfolio of work in Slide Room. If students do not enter Miami University as a declared Art Education major, they must transfer in. Below are the requirements for transfer. *We HIGHLY suggest you meet with Art Education faculty prior to submission to make sure you understand the requirements.

Transfer requirements:

  1. Completion of Art 195 and at least 6 hours of studio credit, and enrollment in 6 additional hours of studio.
  2. Submission of a current transcript of grades or DARS form.
  3. Submission of the following on your teaching website:
  • 10 images of personal artwork from college with captions including media and year completed. Titles are optional. High school images are permitted, but do not count towards the 10 required.
  • Written statement of intent and commitment to teaching art. Consider addressing the following: Why do you want to teach art? What has inspired you to want to teach art? How can you demonstrate your commitment to teaching through writing at this point?
  • Resume with emphasis on work experience related to PK-12 students.

Students who are denied admission in their initial attempt may apply a second time. Students who are denied in their second attempt are ineligible for further consideration.

The transfer requirements are also listed on the flyer below.

Students entering the Art Department in their first year of study may declare Art Education as their major and be admitted to the Bachelor of Science in Art with Multi-Age Teacher Licensure (B.S.) Program. A student who was not initially admitted as an art education student may seek admission to that program after completing Art 195. Students will be admitted as space and resources allow, and admission decisions will be made early second semester each year. Students eligible for admission consideration are transfer students from other schools, Miami students desiring to change or declare their major, and students transferring from Hamilton and Middletown campuses to Oxford campus.
SUBMITTING YOUR TRANSFER PORTFOLIO
  1. Write a cover letter indicating your interest to transfer to the Art Education program. Because students must submit their transfer portfolio via their website (created with guidance in Art 195), the letter must contain the website URL. The site must be well-organized, easily navigable with accompanying contact information in addition to the items listed to the left.
  2. Include a current printed copy of your DAR along with your cover letter.
  3. Submit your cover letter and DAR to the art office.

The Department of Art reserves the right to see actual work if artistic integrity is questioned for any reason.
